How deep should an entryway bench be?
For a hallway at the 36-inch code minimum, keep the bench to 12 inches (30 cm) deep or less — that leaves 24 inches of walking room, which is the point where two people can still pass. In an open foyer you can go to 16 or 18 inches (41 to 46 cm) and gain a genuinely comfortable seat.
That single number decides more than any other. Depth is what a bench takes away from your hallway, and it is the figure most product listings bury under a headline width. Every pick below is ranked with depth carrying the largest single weight in the rubric, which is why an 11.2-inch steel frame can finish above a handsome 18-inch bench that would make a standard corridor unpleasant to walk down.
The second number is seat height. The residential standard is 18 to 19 inches from floor to seat top, and for an entryway bench specifically the figure quoted is 18 inches (46 cm). Below about 17 inches you are lowering yourself further than you expect on a winter morning; above 20 inches your feet stop being flat on the floor and the bench becomes a perch. Instead we compiled the figures each manufacturer publishes, converted every one to both inches and centimeters, and scored five things: how much usable storage the piece gives per inch of floor it takes, its published capacity checked against real shoe lengths, how completely the maker documents its own product, the materials and load ratings it commits to in writing, and what all that is worth against what the category normally asks for the same footprint.
Documentation is in the rubric on purpose, and it separates these eight more than anything else does. Two of the benches below are sold as benches and publish no weight capacity at all. One publishes the internal size of every individual cubby, down to a quarter inch, which is the difference between planning your entryway and hoping. That is a real quality difference and it is one of the few a reader can verify without touching the product.

Open shelves or a closed box?
Five of these benches store shoes on open shelves and three hide them behind a lid or inside cubbies. The choice is usually framed as a style question, and it is not: it is a moisture question. Shoes come into an entryway wet, and a closed compartment with no ventilation traps that moisture against the shoe, which is what grows the bacteria responsible for the smell. If this bench is where wet boots live, the open-shelf and mesh designs are the right answer and the lidded chest is the wrong one, however much tidier it looks.
The counter-argument is real too. An open bench puts every muddy sole on display, and if your entry is visible from a living room that is a genuine cost. Capacity, honestly
Stated pair counts in this category are optimistic, and it is easy to see why once you do the arithmetic. A US men's 10 foot is about 10.8 inches long, and the shoe built around it is roughly another three-quarters of an inch, so a pair of adult sneakers needs about 11.7 inches of clear depth to lie flat, heel to toe. Most of these benches are 11.2 to 11.8 inches deep on the outside, which means the internal shelf is shallower than that and adult shoes sit at a slight angle whatever the listing implies.
This is not a reason to avoid them. A shoe at a shallow angle is perfectly stored.
