Single-model review

VASAGLE ULBS73X 3-tier shoe rack bench

Most cheap shoe storage is a rack you must not sit on. This is a rack with a published seat rating, at the same money — and the rating is the lowest of any seated bench we rank.

A bright minimalist hallway with a bench and simple decor

The verdict

The best open-storage-per-dollar bench we rank: three full-width tiers across 28.7 inches, a steel frame that will not swell if it gets wet, and a 17.7 inch seat that is effectively the ergonomic standard. The published 198 lb top load is the lowest of any seated bench here, and that is the trade.

This bench appears on ten pages of this site and has not had its own review. It occupies a specific niche: the cheapest thing in the registry that is genuinely a bench rather than a rack with a flat top and a disclaimer.

The distinction matters more than it sounds. Plenty of shoe racks at this price publish no load figure at all, which on something people will inevitably sit on is a meaningful omission — our bench weight limits guide covers how common it is.

Three tiers is the whole argument

Three full-width open tiers across 28.7 inches is the most open shoe storage per inch of wall of any bench we rank. Nothing is hidden, nothing tilts, nothing has a mechanism — shoes go on shelves.

That buys two things beyond capacity. The first is that wet shoes dry: open shelving lets air at the sole from underneath, which is the mechanism that actually dries footwear and the reason closed benches develop a smell. Our ventilation guide makes that case in full.

The second is that there is nothing to break. A flip drawer has hinges, a lift-top has a lid stay, a cabinet has doors that must seat precisely. Three shelves on a steel frame has none of those, and on furniture at this price that is a genuine durability argument rather than a consolation.

What it costs you is that every muddy sole is on display at shin height. In an entry you can see from the living room that is a real objection, and the closed alternatives are on our hidden storage page.

The 198 lb rating, read properly

VASAGLE publishes 198 lb (90 kg) static load. That is the lowest figure of any seated bench in our registry — the cubby benches publish 330 to 440 lb, and the HOOBRO small bench publishes 300 on a piece half this width.

One hundred and ninety-eight pounds is a single adult, comfortably, and it is published rather than implied. It is not two adults, and the listing does not claim to be. If two people routinely sit down together in your entry, this is the wrong bench and a 440 lb cubby bench is the right one.

Read it as a static rating, too. That is the load the structure carries standing still; dropping onto a bench is a different kind of load, and a light steel frame has little mass to absorb it.

Steel, and why it suits an entryway

The frame is steel with a wood-look top. In a room where shoes arrive wet that is a better material story than it first appears.

The failure mode of a cheap entryway bench is almost always the same: the laminate on a particleboard leg gets nicked by a boot heel, water sits in the nick, and the board swells locally and never recovers. That is the whole argument of our materials guide. A steel leg does not have that failure mode at all.

The trade is that steel reads industrial, and at this price the finish is powder coat rather than anything finer. It looks like what it is.

The dimension the maker does not publish

Tier clearance. VASAGLE publishes the outside dimensions and the load, but not the vertical space between shelves — which is the figure that decides whether a boot goes in standing up.

On a bench 17.7 inches tall with three tiers, the arithmetic leaves only a few inches per shelf once the top and the shelf thickness are accounted for. That is ample for flats, sneakers and sandals and will not take an ankle boot upright. We cannot tell you the exact figure because it is not published, and we are not going to estimate it from a photograph. If boots are the problem, our boots and tall shoes guide has the formats that genuinely handle them.

That single omission is most of why this bench scores a 7 rather than higher for documentation. Everything else you need is stated.

Where it sits against the alternatives

Against the HOOBRO small bench at 19.7 inches, which costs about the same: the HOOBRO publishes a 300 lb top and a 22 lb per-shelf figure, but it is nine inches narrower and holds two or three pairs per shelf. This one is the better buy if the wall allows 28.7 inches.

Against the bamboo bench at 27.6 inches: the bamboo is cheaper still and publishes 286 lb, and bamboo handles damp as well as steel does. It has three tiers too. That is genuinely the closer call, and it comes down to whether you want 1.1 more inches of bench or a natural material.

Against a cubby bench: a grid stops the pile because there is visibly nowhere to put the eleventh pair, and the cubby benches publish far higher loads. They are also wider and dearer. Our cubby roundup ranks them on internal compartment size.

On our rubric: 9 for value — the joint highest in the registry — with 8 for fit and 7 each for capacity, documentation and build.

What we did not do

We have not assembled this bench, sat on it, or loaded it to 198 pounds. Every figure above is VASAGLE's published specification or arithmetic on it. The tier clearance — the one number that would settle the boot question — is not published, and that is recorded rather than estimated.

What the specs support

  • 17.7 in (45 cm) seat height is effectively the ergonomic standard
  • Three full-width tiers is the most open storage per inch here
  • Steel frame with a wood-look top, so nothing swells if it gets wet
  • 28.7 in (73 cm) is the sweet spot for a standard 36 in hall

Limitations

  • 198 lb static rating is the lowest of the seated benches here
  • Nothing is hidden — this is a rack you can sit on
  • No published tier clearance, so tall boots are untested by the maker

Frequently asked

Questions people actually ask

How much weight does the VASAGLE ULBS73X hold?

A published 198 lb (90 kg) static load. That is one adult comfortably and it is the lowest figure of any seated bench we rank — the cubby benches publish 330 to 440 lb.

How many pairs of shoes fit?

Three full-width open tiers across 28.7 in, which is the most open storage per inch of any bench we rank. VASAGLE publishes no pair count, and tier clearance is unpublished too.

Will boots fit on the shelves?

Not standing up. On a 17.7 in bench with three tiers there are only a few inches of clearance per shelf, though VASAGLE does not publish the figure so we will not name one.

Is a steel frame better for an entryway?

For damp, yes. The usual failure of a cheap bench is a nicked laminate edge on a particleboard leg swelling with water. Steel has no such failure mode. It does read industrial.

Is the seat height comfortable?

17.7 in is effectively the ergonomic standard of 18 to 19 in, slightly low, which is the forgiving direction.

Does it work in a narrow hallway?

At 11.8 in deep it leaves 24.2 in of walkway in a hall at the 36-inch code minimum — just above the roughly 24 in two people need to pass.

Where these figures came from

  • International Residential Code minimum hallway width — 36 in minimum for a residential hallway; 36 to 42 in typical, 42 to 48 in comfortable.
  • Standard bench seat height — 18 to 19 in from floor to seat top is the residential standard; 18 in (46 cm) for an entryway bench specifically.
  • VASAGLE ULBS73X published specification — Published 28.7 x 11.8 x 17.7 in and 198 lb (90 kg) static load, steel frame with a wood-look top, three open tiers. VASAGLE publishes no tier clearance and no stated pair count; both absences are recorded rather than estimated.
