What is a hall tree?
A hall tree is a single freestanding entryway unit that combines three things a hallway usually needs separately: coat hooks or a rail at the top, a bench in the middle, and shoe storage underneath. Modern ones run 27 to 39 inches wide and 68 to 72 inches tall, on a footprint 11 to 14 inches deep.
The appeal is arithmetic. A coat rack, a bench and a shoe rack bought separately take three runs of wall; a hall tree takes one. In an entry with a single usable wall — which is most flats and a great many houses — that is the difference between storage and no storage.
The catch is that a hall tree is a tall, shallow, top-heavy object that you will hang a wet winter coat on and then sit on to pull your boots off. Two published numbers decide whether it survives that: what the seat is rated for, and what each hook will take. Makers are much better at publishing the first than the second.

Hook ratings, where they exist, are consistently 11 lb each. Only one of the seven publishes both numbers. That single fact does more to separate this field than any material or finish difference, and it is why the ranking looks the way it does.
Every one of these needs to be fixed to the wall
A hall tree is roughly six feet tall on a base one foot deep, weighing between 27 and 36 pounds. Hang a wet coat on the top hook and the center of mass moves upward and outward, which is the geometry of something falling over. One maker in this roundup states the requirement plainly — five screws into the wall — and it is the most useful sentence in any of these listings.
Two practical consequences. First, a hall tree is not a renter-friendly purchase unless you can put fixings into the wall and make good afterwards; a freestanding shoe cabinet or a bench is the better call there. Second, the fixing has to go into something structural. A plasterboard anchor rated for a picture frame will not hold a loaded hall tree, and the failure mode is the whole thing coming down.
How wide a wall do you actually need?
