Model reviews

Single-model reviews

One product per page, with its complete published specification, the arithmetic on whether your shoes fit, and the figures its manufacturer chose not to publish.

What a review here contains

The verdict in forty-odd words, a fit analysis against your hallway, the complete published specification with its source, an honest limitations section, and a paragraph headed what we did not do. Every dimension appears in inches and centimeters.

These pages exist because a roundup can only give each product a few hundred words, and some decisions need more than that. If you have narrowed the choice to one model and want to know exactly what its manufacturer commits to in writing before you spend, this is where that lives.

Which products get one

Only products with a complete published dimensional specification. That is the disqualifier for this whole site: a piece nobody has published measurements for cannot be recommended by a site whose entire value is dimensional accuracy, and it certainly cannot carry a page of its own.

The six here are the top pick and the constrained pick from each of the three categories — the bench you buy with a wall to spare and the one you buy without it, the cabinet for a normal hallway and the one for a corridor, the hall tree with the most complete spec sheet and the narrowest one on the market.

The section every review has

Near the bottom of each one is a short paragraph headed what we did not do. It says, in plain terms, that we have not handled the unit, and it names any figure the manufacturer left out rather than filling it in.

That paragraph is the reason the rest of the page is worth reading. Almost everyone ranking for these searches claims hands-on testing; we compete on published, checkable specification instead, and the only way that is worth anything is if we are equally plain about the limits of it.

Frequently asked

Questions people actually ask

Do you test the products you review?

No, and every review says so in a section of its own. We compile the manufacturer's published specification, convert every dimension to both units, check compartment sizes against real shoe lengths, and rank against a published rubric.

How do you choose which models to review?

Only products with a complete published dimensional specification qualify. From those, we write up the top pick and the constrained pick in each of the three categories.

Are the scores in a review the same as in the roundup?

Yes. Every score on the site comes from the same five-metric rubric with the same fixed weights, and the overall figure is computed from the metrics rather than entered by hand.
