How deep does a shoe cabinet need to be?
For adult shoes to lie flat, heel to toe, about 12 inches (30 cm) of clear internal depth. For shoes stored on edge in a tilting flip drawer, 9.4 inches (24 cm) is the practical floor and 8.7 inches (22 cm) is the shallowest cabinet published anywhere.
That answer comes from foot length, and the arithmetic is short enough that you can check it against your own shoes in a minute.

The distinction in that note is the whole point of the page. Foot length is published data. Shelf depth is arithmetic we did on top of it, and we say so, because a chart that quietly conflates the two is why people buy a 25 cm cabinet for a size 12 and find the drawer will not shut.
The US averages give you the shortcut. Women average a size 8.5 to 9, which is about 9.8 inches of foot. Men average a 10 to 11, about 10.8 inches. So a shared household cabinet wants roughly 11.7 inches of clear depth to store everything flat — and manufacturers quote the outside of the box, not the inside, so a 12-inch cabinet gives you less than 12 inches to work with.
If you want to check a size we did not list, the published conversion is straightforward: a US women's size is roughly three times the foot length in inches minus twenty-one, and a men's size is three times the foot length minus twenty-two. Rearranged, a men's 14 is about 12.0 inches of foot.

The 6-inch and 12-inch questions
Two imperial figures come up as often as the whole metric ladder combined.
Six inches (15 cm) is not a cabinet depth. No adult shoe stores in six inches in any orientation except hung on a wall rack or hooked over a rail. If you have found a six-inch product described as a shoe cabinet, it is either a wall-mounted rack or the figure is the door thickness rather than the carcass. The shallowest real cabinet is 8.7 inches.
Twelve inches (30 cm) is the useful one, and it is effectively the category benchmark because it is where an average adult shoe stops needing to tilt. It is also, not coincidentally, IKEA's HEMNES depth — the figure most often quoted online as standard. If you can spare twelve inches, most of the compromises on this page disappear.
Internal depth, which almost nobody publishes
Every depth quoted in a listing is external. The carcass, the back panel and the door take some of it, and a flip drawer's tilting bucket takes more. Of the cabinets we rank, exactly one publishes an internal figure.
A reasonable working rule, which is ours rather than any manufacturer's: subtract about an inch from a shelved cabinet's external depth to get the usable shelf, and expect a flip drawer to hold a shoe up to roughly 30 percent longer than its external depth because the shoe stands at an angle. Neither is a substitute for a published number, which is why documentation is one of the five things we score.
