Storing boots and tall shoes
Every shoe cabinet is sold on its depth, and depth is not what defeats a boot. It is height, and it is the specification the whole category leaves out.

How do you store boots in an entryway?
In an open compartment with the height to stand them up, or lying on their side on a shelf at least 12 inches deep. A flip drawer cannot take a boot in any orientation, and a cubby with a published height of 5.5 inches will not either.
Height is the constraint, not depth
The whole category is marketed on depth, and depth is what decides whether a trainer lies flat. For a boot it is almost irrelevant. What matters is the vertical clearance of the compartment.
The one bench in our roundup that publishes internal compartment dimensions gives 6.75 inches wide by 5.5 inches high by 13.75 inches deep. That 13.75 inches of depth swallows a US men's 13 flat with room to spare — and the 5.5 inches of height takes a trainer and stops dead at anything with a shaft.
Almost nobody else publishes compartment height at all. It is the single most useful missing specification in this category, and it is why our rubric scores documentation as one of five things: on a boot-owning household, that unpublished number is the whole decision.
What boots actually need
The unwelcome conclusion: nothing that hides shoes behind a drawer front stores a boot above ankle height. If boots are the problem, you are shopping for an open format whether you wanted to or not.
The three formats that work
- A cabinet with a dedicated full-height compartment. Two of the cabinets we rank have one, and it is the reason to choose them over an otherwise identical model.
- An open tier at least 12 inches deep, with boots lying on their sides. Not tidy, entirely effective, and every open-tier bench does it.
- A boot tray on the floor by the door. Cheapest, most ventilated, and the honest answer for wellingtons that arrive wet.
For tall boots specifically there is a fourth option worth knowing: boot clips or hangers that suspend a pair from a rail by the top of the shaft. They keep the shaft upright, which prevents the crease at the ankle that flops a boot permanently, and they take no floor at all.
The seasonal answer
Boots are seasonal for most households, and the entryway is the worst place to store them out of season. A pair of winter boots occupying a full-height compartment through July is a compartment doing nothing.
Store out-of-season boots elsewhere — dry, upright or with shapers in the shaft — and size the entryway storage for what is actually in circulation. That usually turns a capacity problem into a non-problem without spending anything.
