What are standard hall tree dimensions?
A standard hall tree is 27 to 39 inches wide (69 to 99 cm), 11 to 14 inches deep (28 to 36 cm), and 68 to 72 inches tall (173 to 183 cm). The bench inside it sits at the usual 17 to 18 inches (43 to 46 cm), and hooks land between 55 and 65 inches from the floor.
Hook height: what it should be, and what a hall tree gives you
If you were mounting hooks on a bare wall, the published guidance is clear. Sixty to sixty-five inches from the floor to the center of the hook for adults, with 66 inches the common builder standard. Thirty-six to forty-two inches for children. Fifty-four to sixty inches specifically in an entryway or mudroom, which is a little lower than a bedroom because coats there are heavier and get grabbed in a hurry.
Above a bench, the rule is relative rather than absolute: mount the hooks 24 to 30 inches above the seat top. With an 18-inch seat that puts them at 42 to 48 inches from the floor, which is low enough that a long coat clears the bench rather than draping across it.
Here is the thing about a hall tree: none of that is adjustable. The hooks are where the frame puts them, typically 55 to 65 inches up, which is right for adults and much too high for a five-year-old. If children are the reason you want one, either accept that their coats will go on the bench, or mount a second low rail on the wall beside it. A hall tree cannot be lowered for children the way a hook rail can.
The same fixed geometry rules out an accessible hall tree. The ADA forward reach range caps a hook at 48 inches from the floor, and no hall tree we found puts its hooks that low, because at 48 inches a hanging coat sits on the bench.
Height is the measurement that catches people out
At 68.9 to 72.1 inches, a hall tree is very nearly six feet tall. Entryways are also, disproportionately often, where the low ceiling is: under a staircase, beneath a landing soffit, next to a meter cupboard, below a bulkhead. Measure floor to the underside of whatever is above your chosen wall before anything else, and add two inches for the fixing bracket most of these need at the top.
The 72.1-inch model is the one to be careful with. In a room with a 78-inch door head, it clears — but not by enough to tilt it upright during assembly, which is how these are usually installed.
Depth and the walkway you are left with
In a hallway at the 36-inch code minimum, an 11.8-inch hall tree leaves 24.2 inches to walk in and a 13.8-inch one leaves 22.2. Twenty-four inches is the practical minimum for two people to pass; 22 is fine alone and awkward with a coat on your arm.
Add to that a coat hanging on the hooks, which projects another three to five inches into the corridor at chest height. The published depth is not the real depth once the thing is in use, and that is worth accounting for before you buy the deepest model on a narrow hall.
