Single-model review
SONGMICS ULBS74 shoe bench with mesh shelves
A steel-framed bench at the exact ergonomic seat height, with open mesh shelves that dry wet shoes instead of sealing the damp in. The trade is a lower load rating than the wooden benches.

The verdict
The right bench for a hallway that shoes arrive wet into. Open mesh shelves ventilate rather than trap, the 17.5 inch (44.5 cm) seat is within half an inch of the residential standard, and 11.8 inches of depth keeps a 36-inch hall walkable. The 198 lb top rating is the trade.
This is a narrower argument than the top pick, and a more specific one. If the reason you are buying a bench is that wet shoes are currently on the floor by the door, ventilation is the specification that matters and this is the shape that provides it.
The ventilation case, briefly
Shoes come into an entryway carrying moisture. Put them in a closed compartment and that moisture stays against the shoe, which is the condition bacteria need and bacteria are what produce the smell. Open mesh does the opposite: air moves through the shelf, the shoe dries, and the problem does not start.
This matters more in some households than others. If your entry is where boots come off in January, it is the deciding specification. If shoes arrive dry and the problem is tidiness, a closed cabinet is the better answer and this bench is solving a problem you do not have.
Seat height, and why 17.5 inches is the good number
SONGMICS publishes 44.5 cm, which is 17.5 inches. The residential standard is 18 to 19 inches and the entryway-specific figure quoted is 18 inches, so this sits half an inch under both.
Half an inch below standard is a better place to be than half an inch above it. At 17.5 inches an average adult still has feet flat on the floor with knees at roughly a right angle, which is the position you want for pulling a boot on. Benches at 19 inches and up start to become perches, and this is the one measurement where erring low is the safer error.
The 198 lb question
One hundred and ninety-eight pounds is the joint lowest published static load among the benches we rank, against a top of 440. It is worth understanding what that does and does not mean.
It is a genuine limit rather than a soft one, and 198 lb is below the weight of a good many adults. For a piece you sit down on daily, that is the figure to check against the person who will use it most. It is also a static figure: the instantaneous load of dropping onto a bench is higher than sitting down onto it, and no maker publishes that number.
In its favor, SONGMICS publishes the figure at all, and publishes it specifically for the top rather than for the whole assembly. Two benches in our roundup publish nothing, and a stated 198 lb is more useful than an unstated number that might be anything.
What we did not do
We have not sat on it, loaded the shelves, or seen how the mesh handles road salt over a winter. What we have done is compile the manufacturer's published dimensions and load rating, convert them, and check the seat height against the published residential standard. Where a figure is not published — shelf-to-shelf clearance, which is what decides whether a boot fits — the page says so.

What the specs support
- 17.5 in (44.5 cm) seat height is within an inch of the ergonomic standard
- Open mesh shelves dry wet shoes instead of sealing the damp in
- 31.5 in (80 cm) wide leaves room either side in a 36 in hall
- The manufacturer publishes both imperial and metric, which is rarer than it should be
Limitations
- 198 lb rating is less than half the 15-compartment bench above
- Open shelving shows every muddy sole on the shelf
- No published shelf-to-shelf clearance, so tall boots are unplanned for

You want the shoes hidden. Everything on this bench is on show, and if that bothers you a flip-drawer cabinet is the better shape.

Frequently asked
Questions people actually ask
How tall is the seat on the SONGMICS ULBS74?
17.5 inches (44.5 cm), which is half an inch below the 18 to 19 inch residential standard. That is the safer direction to err in for a bench you put shoes on from.
How much weight does it hold?
198 lb (90 kg) published static load on the top. That is the joint lowest of the benches we rank, and worth checking against the person who will use it most.
Do the mesh shelves actually help with shoe odor?
They address the cause. Odor comes from bacteria that need trapped moisture; open mesh lets air move through so shoes dry instead. A closed compartment does the opposite.
Will winter boots fit on the shelves?
SONGMICS does not publish shelf-to-shelf clearance, so we cannot tell you. This is one of the figures we mark as unpublished rather than estimating it.
How much hallway does it leave?
At 11.8 inches (30 cm) deep it leaves 24.2 inches of walkway in a hallway at the 36-inch minimum, which is just past the point where two people can pass.

Where these figures came from
- International Residential Code minimum hallway width — 36 in minimum for a residential hallway; 36 to 42 in typical, 42 to 48 in comfortable.
- Standard bench seat height — 18 to 19 in from floor to seat top is the residential standard; 18 in (46 cm) for an entryway bench specifically.
- SONGMICS ULBS74X published specification — 31.5 x 11.8 x 17.5 in (80 x 30 x 44.5 cm), 198 lb maximum static load on the top, two open mesh shelves, steel frame.
- Shoe storage ventilation and odor — Closed shoe storage traps moisture, which encourages the bacteria responsible for odor; open designs allow airflow.
