The verdict

The right bench for a hallway that shoes arrive wet into. Open mesh shelves ventilate rather than trap, the 17.5 inch (44.5 cm) seat is within half an inch of the residential standard, and 11.8 inches of depth keeps a 36-inch hall walkable. The 198 lb top rating is the trade.

This is a narrower argument than the top pick, and a more specific one. If the reason you are buying a bench is that wet shoes are currently on the floor by the door, ventilation is the specification that matters and this is the shape that provides it.

The ventilation case, briefly

Shoes come into an entryway carrying moisture. Put them in a closed compartment and that moisture stays against the shoe, which is the condition bacteria need and bacteria are what produce the smell. Open mesh does the opposite: air moves through the shelf, the shoe dries, and the problem does not start.

This matters more in some households than others. If your entry is where boots come off in January, it is the deciding specification. If shoes arrive dry and the problem is tidiness, a closed cabinet is the better answer and this bench is solving a problem you do not have.

Seat height, and why 17.5 inches is the good number

SONGMICS publishes 44.5 cm, which is 17.5 inches. The residential standard is 18 to 19 inches and the entryway-specific figure quoted is 18 inches, so this sits half an inch under both.

Half an inch below standard is a better place to be than half an inch above it. At 17.5 inches an average adult still has feet flat on the floor with knees at roughly a right angle, which is the position you want for pulling a boot on. Benches at 19 inches and up start to become perches, and this is the one measurement where erring low is the safer error.

The 198 lb question

One hundred and ninety-eight pounds is the joint lowest published static load among the benches we rank, against a top of 440. It is worth understanding what that does and does not mean.

It is a genuine limit rather than a soft one, and 198 lb is below the weight of a good many adults. For a piece you sit down on daily, that is the figure to check against the person who will use it most. It is also a static figure: the instantaneous load of dropping onto a bench is higher than sitting down onto it, and no maker publishes that number.

In its favor, SONGMICS publishes the figure at all, and publishes it specifically for the top rather than for the whole assembly. Two benches in our roundup publish nothing, and a stated 198 lb is more useful than an unstated number that might be anything.

What we did not do

We have not sat on it, loaded the shelves, or seen how the mesh handles road salt over a winter. What we have done is compile the manufacturer's published dimensions and load rating, convert them, and check the seat height against the published residential standard.
