Head to head
Prepac cubbie bench alternatives
The Prepac 18-pair is the bench people keep searching for and cannot currently buy. Here are five that are in stock, measured against the figures Prepac actually published — and an honest account of what you lose.

What should you buy instead of the Prepac cubbie bench?
For the same 18 pairs, either 18-cubby bench below. But be clear about the trade: Prepac published a 13.75 in internal cubby depth and nothing live matches it — the closest is 11 in. You gain a proper 19 in seat height instead of Prepac's 24 in perch, and a published load Prepac never gave.
The Prepac 18-Pair Shoe Storage Cubbie Bench is one of the most-searched products in this category and it has been showing as unavailable every time we have checked it, across three separate runs. Our review of it is still up, because the specification is genuinely useful as a benchmark, but there is currently no way to buy one.
This page exists because "unavailable" is a useless answer to someone with 18 pairs of shoes by the door. Everything below is in stock and verified, and the comparison is against Prepac's own published numbers rather than against a vague impression of it.
What Prepac actually published
Worth setting out first, because it is unusually complete and it is what any replacement has to be measured against.
- Assembled size 48 x 16 x 24 in (122 x 41 x 61 cm).
- Each cubby, internal: 6.75 in wide x 13.75 in deep x 5.5 in high. Almost nothing in this category publishes a per-cubby figure at all.
- Stated capacity 18 pairs.
- Laminated composite wood with an MDF backer, and a 5-year limited parts warranty.
- No weight capacity published — the one significant gap, on a piece sold as a bench.
The 13.75 inches of internal depth is the number that made it special. That swallows a US men's 13 flat, heel to toe, with no tilting and no overhang — which is why it was the pick on our big feet page.

Three things fall straight out of that table, and two of them favor the replacements.

The only published cubby height on this pageAraSyleon Shoe Rack Bench with Cushion, 18 Cubbies (59.1 in)
The one bench here that publishes all three internal cubby dimensions — 11 by 9.5 by 5.3 inches — which settles the shoe-size question instead of leaving it open.

Full specification
Source: Published 59.1 L x 11.81 W x 19 H in, 18 open cubbies each 11 L x 9.5 W x 5.3 H in, 400 lb maximum capacity, 39 lb product weight, removable machine-washable cotton-linen cushion, 6 non-slip foot pads, AraSyleon listing.
What the specs support
- Publishes cubby length, width AND height — the only product on this page that does
- 400 lb published capacity, stated as two to three adults
- Machine-washable cover rather than merely removable
- 18 open compartments at 11.81 in (30 cm) deep
Limitations
- The published 5.3 in (13 cm) cubby height is a real ceiling — a bulky high-top or a boot will not go in
- No compartment boards lift out, so the cubby pitch is fixed
- 59.1 in (150 cm) wide, and stock has been intermittent
Skip this if
You own boots or chunky high-tops and want them in the bench. 5.3 inches is the published figure and it will not stretch.
Who it is forA larger household storing flats, sneakers and sandals, that would rather know the compartment size than find out.
Pick 2
Publishing the compartment sizeHzuaneri Shoe Storage Bench with Cushion, 18 Cubbies (59 in)
One of only two cubby benches we found that publishes what a single cubby actually measures — 11 inches deep by 9.44 wide — which is the number the rest of the category leaves you to guess.
Key dimensions
- Width
- 59 in (150 cm)
- Depth
- 11.8 in (30 cm)
- Height
- 18.9 in (48 cm)
- Seat height
- 18.9 in (48 cm)
- Depth band
- Slim
Footprint 59 x 11.8 x 18.9 in (150 x 30 x 48 cm). Most shoes flat, larger sizes at an angle.
Full specification
Source: Published 11.8 D x 59 W x 18.9 H in, 18 compartments each 11 in D x 9.44 in W, four removable intermediate boards, 330 lb maximum load, 1.6 in cushion, 37.5 lb product weight, particleboard, 6 anti-slip pads, Hzuaneri listing.
What the specs support
- Publishes the internal cubby footprint, which almost nothing else in this category does
- Four of the intermediate boards lift out, turning two short cubbies into one boot-height slot
- 1.6 in (4 cm) of cushion is thicker than the category norm and the figure is published
- Eighteen compartments at 11.8 in (30 cm) deep
Limitations
- Cubby HEIGHT is not published, only depth and width — the one dimension a tall shoe is defeated by
- 330 lb across 59 inches of span is the lowest load-per-inch here
- At 59 in (150 cm) it needs most of a wall
Skip this if
Your entry is under five feet of clear wall. Nothing about this bench scales down.
Who it is forA family of four or more that wants one open compartment per pair and can give up a full wall.
Pick 3
The strongest published seat per dollarDINZI LVJ Shoe Storage Bench with Cushion, 12 Cubbies (40.9 in)
Twelve compartments and a 440 lb rating for under eighty dollars, with the same three-height outer shelves as its narrower sibling.
Key dimensions
- Width
- 40.9 in (104 cm)
- Depth
- 11.8 in (30 cm)
- Height
- 18.9 in (48 cm)
- Seat height

Full specification
Source: Published 40.9 L x 11.8 W x 18.9 H in, 12 cubbies, 10-12 pairs, 440 lb (200 kg) capacity, 6 fixed center compartments with outer shelves adjustable to 3 heights, 39.4 lb product weight, particle board, removable zippered cotton-linen cushion, DINZI LVJ listing.
What the specs support
- 440 lb (200 kg) published capacity, which the maker states is two adults at once
- Twelve compartments at 40.9 in (104 cm) is a good compartment-per-inch return
- Outer shelves adjust to three heights for boots
- 11.8 in (30 cm) deep, the same shallow footprint as the 9-cubby version
Limitations
- Internal cubby dimensions are not published, so the shoe-size ceiling is unknown
- Six of the twelve compartments are fixed height
- The listing notes a power drill makes assembly easier, which is an unusual admission for a flat-pack bench
Skip this if
Your wall is under about 41 inches. This is a long bench and it does not shorten.
Who it is forA household of two to four that wants one compartment per pair and a seat rated for two adults.
Pick 4
Most entrywaysVASAGLE Shoe Bench with Cushion, 15 Compartments (ULHS15)
The one bench here that gives you a real seat, a 440 lb rating and fifteen adjustable compartments without going deeper than a foot.
Key dimensions
- Width
- 41.3 in (105 cm)
- Depth
- 11.8 in (30 cm)
- Height
- 18.9 in (48 cm)
- Seat height
- 18.9 in (48 cm)

- Slim
Footprint 41.3 x 11.8 x 18.9 in (105 x 30 x 48 cm). Most shoes flat, larger sizes at an angle.
Full specification
Source: Published dimensions and 440 lb load rating, VASAGLE ULHS15WT / ULHS15BR listing.
What the specs support
- 440 lb rating is the highest of any bench here, and it is published rather than implied
- 11.8 in (30 cm) deep, so it clears a 36 in hallway with the door swing intact
- Adjustable shelves mean boots and sneakers can share the same carcass
- The cushion cover unzips, which matters on the one surface in the house that meets wet shoes
Limitations
- 41.3 in (105 cm) is a lot of wall for a small entry
- Compartment internal depth is not published, so tall boots are a gamble
- 12 mm particleboard is the category norm, not an upgrade
Skip this if
You have less than 44 in (112 cm) of clear wall. At 41.3 in wide this bench needs the whole run, and there is a narrower option below that gives up only a few pairs.
Who it is forA family entry with a full wall to give it, where the bench has to take an adult sitting down to pull boots off every day.
Pick 5
The shortest wall that still takes a cubby benchDINZI LVJ Shoe Storage Bench with Cushion, 9 Cubbies (31.5 in)
Nine compartments in 31.5 inches, with the outer shelves adjustable to three heights so boots and sneakers do not have to share a pitch.
Key dimensions
- Width
- 31.5 in (80 cm)
- Depth
- 11.8 in (30 cm)
- Height
- 18.9 in (48 cm)
- Seat height
- 18.9 in (48 cm)
- Depth band
- Slim
Footprint 31.5 x 11.8 x 18.9 in (80 x 30 x 48 cm). Most shoes flat, larger sizes at an angle.
Full specification
Source: Published 31.5 L x 11.8 W x 18.9 H in, 9 cubbies, 7-9 pairs, 330 lb (150 kg) capacity, 3 fixed center compartments with outer shelves adjustable to 3 heights, 29.9 lb product weight, particleboard, removable zippered cotton-linen cushion, DINZI LVJ listing.
What the specs support
- Adjustable outer shelves at three heights, which is what lets one bench take both boots and flats
- 330 lb published static load on a bench that weighs only 29.9 lb
- 31.5 in (80 cm) wide is the narrowest cubby bench we could verify as purchasable
- 11.8 in (30 cm) deep leaves a 36-inch hallway walkable
Limitations
- DINZI LVJ does not publish the internal cubby dimensions, so the largest shoe that fits is unknown
- The three center compartments are fixed — only the outer columns adjust
- 7-9 pairs is the lowest capacity of the cubby benches here
Skip this if
You need more than about nine pairs. The 40.9-inch version of the same bench costs ten dollars more and adds three compartments.
Who it is forA one- or two-person entry with a wall under about 32 inches, where open compartments are preferred to doors.
What you lose
Internal depth — 13.75 in, and nothing matches it
This is the honest headline. Prepac's cubbies were 13.75 inches deep. The two live 18-cubby benches publish 11 inches. That is 2.75 inches less, and it is the difference between a large men's shoe sitting flat and a large men's shoe overhanging the front edge.
If the reason you wanted the Prepac was big feet, none of these is a like-for-like replacement and we are not going to pretend otherwise. The formats that genuinely take a size 13 flat are on our shoe storage for big feet page, and they are mostly deeper shelved cabinets rather than cubby benches.
Wall efficiency
Prepac fitted 18 pairs into 48 inches. Both live 18-cubby benches need 59 inches for the same count — eleven more inches of wall for identical capacity. Prepac achieved that with narrower cubbies, 6.75 inches against 9.44 to 9.5, which is a tighter fit per shoe but a far better use of the wall.
So if your constraint is wall length rather than shoe size, the honest answer may be fewer pairs. The 15-compartment VASAGLE at 41.3 inches is seven inches narrower than the Prepac was and holds a stated 8 to 10 pairs.
What you gain
A seat height you can actually use
Prepac's bench top sat at 24 inches. The residential seat standard is 18 to 19 inches, and 24 is six inches above it — closer to a low kitchen counter than a bench. It was a perch, and our review said so.
Every alternative here lands at 18.9 or 19 inches, which is inside the standard. If anyone using the bench is short, elderly, or a child, that is not a minor improvement — it is the difference between furniture that works for them and furniture that does not. Our bench dimensions page covers why the standard sits where it does.
A published load rating
Prepac published no weight capacity at all. Every one of the five below publishes one, from 330 to 440 lb, and two of them state it as two to three adults at once. On a piece of furniture whose primary job is to be sat on, that is the specification Prepac was missing and these are not.
The two highest figures — 440 lb — belong to the 12-cubby and 15-compartment benches, which are also the two narrowest of the higher-capacity options. Load per inch of span is better on a shorter bench, for the reasons our weight limits guide explains.
Adjustability Prepac did not offer
Prepac's cubbies were fixed at 5.5 inches high. Three of the five here adjust: two have outer shelves that set to three heights, and one has four intermediate boards that lift out entirely to make a boot-height slot. For a household whose footwear changes with the season, that is worth more than the 2.75 inches of depth you gave up.
Which one, by what drew you to the Prepac
- You wanted 18 pairs and you know what fits: the AraSyleon, the only bench here that publishes all three internal cubby dimensions, at 400 lb.
- You wanted 18 pairs and you own boots: the Hzuaneri, whose four intermediate boards lift out to make tall slots — the closest thing to solving what the shallower cubbies cost you.
- You wanted the strongest seat: the DINZI 12-cubby or the VASAGLE ULHS15, both at a published 440 lb.
- Your wall is shorter than the Prepac's 48 inches: the VASAGLE ULHS15 at 41.3 in, or the DINZI 9-cubby at 31.5 in.
- You wanted it for big feet specifically: none of these. Read our big feet page instead — the honest answer is a deeper cabinet, not a cubby bench.
If the Prepac comes back into stock, our review of it stands and the 13.75-inch cubby is still the best published internal depth in the category. Until it does, these five are what you can actually buy.
Frequently asked
Questions people actually ask
Is the Prepac 18-pair cubbie bench discontinued?
We cannot say discontinued — only that it has shown as unavailable every time we have checked across three separate runs, so there is currently no way to buy one. Our review of it stays up because its published specification is a useful benchmark.
What is the closest alternative to the Prepac cubbie bench?
Either 18-cubby bench here matches its pair count. Neither matches its 13.75 in internal cubby depth — the closest publishes 11 in — but both give a 19 in seat height instead of Prepac's 24 in and a published load Prepac never stated.
Why were the Prepac cubbies better for large shoes?
Internal depth. At 13.75 in a US men's 13 sits flat, heel to toe, with no overhang. The live cubby benches publish 11 in, which is 2.75 in less.
Do any alternatives hold 18 pairs in 48 inches like the Prepac did?
No. Both live 18-cubby benches need 59 in for the same 18 pairs, because their cubbies are wider — 9.44 to 9.5 in against Prepac's 6.75 in.
Was the Prepac bench comfortable to sit on?
Not especially. Its top sat at 24 in, six inches above the 18-19 in residential seat standard. Every alternative here is at 18.9 or 19 in, which is inside it.
Did the Prepac publish a weight capacity?
No, which was the notable gap in an otherwise unusually complete specification. All five alternatives publish one, between 330 and 440 lb.

- Average US shoe size, men — Reported average of US men's 10 to 11.
- Standard bench seat height — 18 to 19 in from floor to seat top is the residential standard; 18 in (46 cm) for an entryway bench specifically.
- Prepac published specification — Assembled 48 W x 16 D x 24 H in, per-cubby internal 6.75 W x 5.5 H x 13.75 D in, stated 18 pairs, laminated composite wood with MDF backer, 5-year limited parts warranty. No weight capacity published. Retained here as a benchmark; the product itself has shown as unavailable on every check.
- Manufacturer published specifications, the five alternatives — Every figure for the alternatives is that maker's own published number, read from the live listing, and each was confirmed purchasable before inclusion. Where a maker publishes no internal cubby size, the absence is recorded rather than estimated.
