Bench cushions and upholstery

The cushion is the part of an entryway bench that wears out, and it changes a measurement most listings do not restate. Two things to check before you buy.

What should you look for in an entryway bench cushion?

Two things: a removable, washable cover, and a stated finished seat height rather than a frame height. A two-inch cushion on an 18-inch frame gives a 20-inch seat, which is above the ergonomic standard and is not what the listing said.

The seat height nobody restates

The residential seat-height standard is 18 to 19 inches from floor to seat top, and 18 inches is the figure quoted specifically for entryway benches. Most manufacturers publish the frame height.

Add a cushion and the real seat is two to three inches higher. An 18.9-inch frame with a cushion becomes a 21-inch seat, which is high enough that shorter adults will find their feet leave the floor — exactly the position you do not want for pulling boots on.

If a listing quotes a height and shows a cushion in the photograph, assume the real figure is higher unless it says otherwise. Where a bench sits at 17.5 inches, a cushion brings it to about 19.5, which is comfortably within range. Where it starts at 19, a cushion takes it out.

The cover is the specification that matters

An entryway bench cushion is the only soft surface in the house that meets wet coats, wet shoes and the outside of bags. It gets dirty in a way a dining bench cushion does not.

So the question is not the fabric's appearance, it is whether the cover comes off. One bench we rank publishes exactly this: a zippered linen-look cover attached with hook-and-loop fasteners, both removable. That is a specification worth choosing on, because the alternative is a cushion that is dirty within a season and cannot be cleaned.

  • Zippered, removable cover — the specification to look for. Ask before you buy if it is not stated.
  • Hook-and-loop attachment — keeps the cushion from sliding, and lets it come off entirely.
  • Linen-look and polyester weaves — practical, though they mark with road salt.
  • Seagrass and natural fibers — handsome, and a poor surface for wet boots.
  • Bonded or coated finishes — wipe clean, and they crack at the fold line over time.

The unupholstered option

It is worth saying plainly: an entryway bench does not need a cushion. It is used for thirty seconds at a time, standing up again immediately. A bare wooden or steel top is more comfortable than it sounds for that duration, wipes clean in a second, and has no component that wears out.

The case for a cushion is that the bench is also somewhere people sit and wait — a hall that doubles as a room, a house where visitors linger at the door. If that is not your entry, the cushion is the part you will be replacing in three years for no benefit.

What the specs support

  • 440 lb rating is the highest of any bench here, and it is published rather than implied
  • 11.8 in (30 cm) deep, so it clears a 36 in hallway with the door swing intact
  • Adjustable shelves mean boots and sneakers can share the same carcass
  • The cushion cover unzips, which matters on the one surface in the house that meets wet shoes

Limitations

  • 41.3 in (105 cm) is a lot of wall for a small entry
  • Compartment internal depth is not published, so tall boots are a gamble
  • 12 mm particleboard is the category norm, not an upgrade

Skip this if

You have less than 44 in (112 cm) of clear wall. At 41.3 in wide this bench needs the whole run, and there is a narrower option below that gives up only a few pairs.

Who it is forA family entry with a full wall to give it, where the bench has to take an adult sitting down to pull boots off every day.

Source: Published 42 W x 18 D x 18 H in with a 42 x 18 x 10 in storage compartment and 18 in seat height, Nathan James Beacon listing.

What the specs support

  • The only bench here that publishes its internal compartment height (10 in)
  • 18 in seat height is exactly the residential standard
  • Solid rubberwood legs rather than a laminated leg panel
  • Reads as furniture, not as storage, in a room you can see from

Limitations

  • 18 in (46 cm) deep is half again as deep as the steel benches here
  • No published weight capacity, which on a bench is the figure you want
  • Seagrass is a poor surface for wet boots

Skip this if

Your hallway is at the 36 in code minimum. At 18 in deep this bench takes half the width, which is uncomfortable to walk past every day.

Who it is forAn open entry or a wide foyer where the bench is on show and the storage is for bags rather than muddy boots.

Source: Published dimensions 31.5 x 11.8 x 17.5 in (80 x 30 x 44.5 cm) and 198 lb top load, SONGMICS ULBS74X listing.

What the specs support

  • 17.5 in (44.5 cm) seat height is within an inch of the ergonomic standard
  • Open mesh shelves dry wet shoes instead of sealing the damp in
  • 31.5 in (80 cm) wide leaves room either side in a 36 in hall
  • The manufacturer publishes both imperial and metric, which is rarer than it should be

Limitations

  • 198 lb rating is less than half the 15-compartment bench above
  • Open shelving shows every muddy sole on the shelf
  • No published shelf-to-shelf clearance, so tall boots are unplanned for

Skip this if

You want the shoes hidden. Everything on this bench is on show, and if that bothers you a flip-drawer cabinet is the better shape.

Who it is forA hallway that is also a walkway, where a foot of depth is the most you can give up and wet shoes need to dry.

Frequently asked

Questions people actually ask

Does a cushion change the bench seat height?

Yes, by two to three inches, and most listings quote the frame height rather than the finished one. An 18-inch frame with a cushion is a 20 to 21 inch seat, which is above the ergonomic standard.

What is the best cushion cover for an entryway bench?

A zippered, removable one. It is the only soft surface in the house that meets wet shoes and coats, so the ability to take the cover off and wash it matters more than the fabric.

Do entryway benches need cushions at all?

No. The bench is used for about thirty seconds at a time. A bare top wipes clean, never wears out, and is perfectly comfortable for that duration.

Is seagrass a good entryway bench material?

It looks excellent and handles wet boots badly. It is a good choice for an open foyer where the bench is decorative, and a poor one for the door boots come off at.
