Ranked roundup
Entryway benches for apartments
An apartment entry has three constraints a house does not: you cannot drill, you have to get it up the stairs, and the hallway is usually the walkway. Five benches filtered on all three.

What makes an entryway bench work in an apartment?
Three things a house never asks about: it must be stable without being screwed to the wall, one person must be able to carry and build it, and it has to leave the corridor walkable. Width matters less than people expect — depth and weight are what actually decide it.
This page exists because the obvious filter is the wrong one. Search for apartment entryway furniture and you get small things, on the assumption that an apartment is simply a smaller house. The real differences are not about size. They are about what your tenancy allows, what fits through the door of a walk-up, and the fact that in most flats the entry is also the only route to every other room.
So the filter here is different from our small and narrow page, which ranks on the tape measure alone. Two benches appear on both, and three do not. If your constraint is purely the width of the wall, that page is the better one to start from; if your constraint is that you cannot put five holes in a rented wall, this one is.
What got on this page
- Stable without a wall anchor. Low and wide, so nothing here depends on a fixing you may not be allowed to make and would have to fill on the way out. Every tall, shallow piece we rank is excluded from this page on that basis alone.
- Carryable and assemblable by one person. The heaviest pick here is under 25 lb in the box; the lightest is 10.3 lb.
- 12 inches of depth or less, so a corridor at the 36-inch code minimum keeps at least 24 inches of walking room.
- Storage built in, and published figures for all of it. Nothing here is a bare seat.
- Currently purchasable, verified through the live price layer at build time.
One thing deliberately not used as a criterion: price. Apartment renters are not automatically on a budget and it is slightly insulting to assume so. Four of these five happen to be inexpensive because shallow open-tier benches are cheap to build, not because the page was filtered that way. If price is your actual constraint, the under-$100 page ranks on exactly that.
The five, on what a rental actually asks
The walkway column is the one to take seriously. Twenty-four inches is the practical minimum for two people to pass, or for one person to pass carrying something — and in a flat, the entry corridor is where every delivery, every suitcase and every piece of furniture you ever buy has to travel. Four of these five clear it. The fifth misses by about an inch, which in a corridor you carry shopping down is a real difference rather than a rounding one.
The weight column matters more in a walk-up than anywhere else. A 10.3 lb bench goes up four flights under one arm. It also, as its own listing implies, slides if you push off it standing up — which is the honest trade of a light frame and is worth knowing before you buy it for an older relative.
None of these needs a wall fixing, and that is the criterion that removed the most candidates. Every hall tree we rank has to be screwed to the wall; so does every shoe cabinet over about 45 inches tall. In a rental those are not impossible, but they are a conversation, a set of holes and a filling job on the way out.

What the specs support
- Bamboo handles entryway humidity better than a particleboard carcass
- 11.3 in (29 cm) is the shallowest bench in this roundup
- Three published widths — 19.7, 27.6 and 35.4 in — so you can size to the wall
- Open tiers, so nothing traps moisture against a wet sole
Limitations
- 286 lb sits between the two steel-framed benches here
- No back or arms, so it is a perch rather than a place to sit and wait
- Bamboo marks if road salt is left on it over a winter

Your entry takes serious winter boots. At 11.3 in (29 cm) deep the tiers hold shoes, not knee-high boots stood upright.
Who it is forA humid or coastal entry, or anyone who wants the shallowest possible bench that is still a bench.
Pick 2
Under 20 inches of wallHOOBRO Small 3-Tier Shoe Bench (BG50HX01)
Nineteen and a half inches wide with a 300 lb top — the answer when the only free wall is the strip beside the door.
Key dimensions
- Width
- 19.7 in (50 cm)
- Depth
- 11.2 in (28 cm)
- Height
- 19 in (48 cm)
- Seat height
- 19 in (48 cm)

Full specification
Source: Published 19.7 x 11.2 x 19 in, 300 lb top / 22 lb per mesh shelf, 10.3 lb item weight, HOOBRO BG50HX01 listing.
What the specs support
- 19.7 in (50 cm) wide fits between a door casing and a radiator
- 300 lb top load despite the size — it is a seat, not a shelf pretending
- 22 lb per mesh shelf is double the fabric-shelf version
- Mesh shelves let wet soles drip and dry
Limitations
- Two or three pairs per shelf is the honest capacity at this width
- 10.3 lb means it slides if you push off it standing up
- 19 in seat height is tall for a bench this narrow, so it reads perch-like

More than two people use this entry daily. At 19.7 in wide it is a one-person landing spot and it will overflow.
Who it is forAn apartment entry, a landing, or the awkward wall segment where nothing 30 inches wide will go.
Pick 3
Shoe count per dollarVASAGLE 3-Tier Shoe Rack Bench (ULBS73X)
Three open tiers across 28.7 in with a 198 lb top — the cheapest shape that still takes an adult sitting down.
Key dimensions
- Width
- 28.7 in (73 cm)
- Depth
- 11.8 in (30 cm)
- Height
- 17.7 in (45 cm)
- Seat height
- 17.7 in (45 cm)
- Depth band
- Slim
Footprint 28.7 x 11.8 x 17.7 in (73 x 30 x 45 cm). Most shoes flat, larger sizes at an angle.
Full specification
Source: Published 28.7 x 11.8 x 17.7 in and 198 lb (90 kg) static load, VASAGLE ULBS73X listing.
What the specs support
- 17.7 in (45 cm) seat height is effectively the ergonomic standard
- Three full-width tiers is the most open storage per inch here
- Steel frame with a wood-look top, so nothing swells if it gets wet
- 28.7 in (73 cm) is the sweet spot for a standard 36 in hall
Limitations
- 198 lb static rating is the lowest of the seated benches here
- Nothing is hidden — this is a rack you can sit on
- No published tier clearance, so tall boots are untested by the maker

The entry is visible from the living room. Three tiers of open shoes is a lot of visual noise from a sofa.
Who it is forA back door, a mudroom, or a household that would rather see the shoes than hunt for them.
Pick 4
A short wallVASAGLE Storage Bench with Cushion, Hidden Storage (ULHS020)
Under two feet of wall, a 300 lb published seat and the lowest cushion height here — the cushioned bench for the gap everything else overshoots.
Key dimensions
- Width
- 23.6 in (60 cm)
- Depth
- 11.8 in (30 cm)
- Height
- 17.3 in (44 cm)
- Seat height
- 17.3 in (44 cm)
- Depth band
- Slim
Footprint 23.6 x 11.8 x 17.3 in (60 x 30 x 44 cm). Most shoes flat, larger sizes at an angle.
Full specification
Source: Published 11.8 x 23.6 x 17.3 in (30 x 60 x 44 cm) and 300 lb load, VASAGLE ULHS020W01 listing.
What the specs support
- 23.6 in (60 cm) wide fits the gap beside a door that a 30-inch bench will not
- 17.3 in (44 cm) is the lowest seat here, so the cushion lands near the 18 in standard rather than past it
- 300 lb published static load on a bench this small is a genuine figure, not an implied one
- The maker publishes both imperial and metric, which the metric half of this category needs
Limitations
- No published pair count and no internal dimensions, so what actually fits is a guess
- A single hidden compartment is the smallest storage on this page by a wide margin
- Closed storage under a padded lid, which is the worst combination for shoes that come in wet
- One adult, one bag. There is no version of this bench that seats two

You have more than about 30 inches of wall. At that point a wider bench costs the same floor depth and holds three times as much.
Who it is forA studio entry, a landing, or the stretch of wall between a door casing and a radiator where 24 inches is the whole budget.
Pick 5
A wipe-clean coverForteek 32-Inch Tufted Faux-Leather Shoe Bench
A button-tufted faux-leather seat on a black metal frame — the cushion here you clean with a cloth rather than a wash cycle, and it publishes 400 lb while doing it.
Key dimensions
- Width
- 32.3 in (82 cm)
- Depth
- 13 in (33 cm)
- Height
- 18.5 in (47 cm)
- Seat height
- 18.5 in (47 cm)
- Depth band
- Standard
Footprint 32.3 x 13 x 18.5 in (82 x 33 x 47 cm). Adult shoes flat, heel to toe.
Full specification
Source: Published 32.28 W x 12.99 D x 18.5 H in, button-tufted faux-leather seat over high-density foam, powder-coated black metal frame with reinforced joints, one open rustic-wood shelf stated to hold 4-6 pairs, 400 lb static weight capacity, anti-slip foot pads, 18.74 lb product weight, Forteek 32-inch tufted shoe bench listing.
What the specs support
- Faux leather wipes clean with a cloth, which no fabric cushion here does
- 400 lb (181 kg) published static load, on a bench that weighs 18.74 lb itself
- 18.5 in (47 cm) finished seat height lands inside the 18-19 in residential norm
- Powder-coated metal frame with reinforced joints rather than a laminated board leg panel
Limitations
- One open shelf and a stated 4-6 pairs — well under what a two- or three-tier bench of the same width holds
- 12.99 in (33 cm) deep, which is deeper than most benches at this width
- A coated cover wipes clean and can eventually crack along the fold line where you sit
- It is the dearest bench on our cushioned page and the one that holds least, which is a combination worth thinking about
Skip this if
Pair count is the problem. A second and third tier under the seat would double what this holds, and several cheaper benches give you exactly that.
Who it is forA wet, muddy entry where the cushion has to survive being sat on in a coat and wiped down afterwards.
The door swing, which apartments get wrong more often
A flat entry is usually a single door opening into a short hall, and the door sweeps a quarter circle with a radius equal to its own width — typically 32 to 36 inches. In a house that arc usually lands in open floor. In a flat it frequently lands exactly where the only free wall is.
Open the door fully, put a piece of tape on the floor at the leading edge and swing it closed. Whatever the tape sweeps is unavailable, and it is often the difference between a 32.3-inch bench and a 19.7-inch one. Our placement guide covers the same arithmetic for cabinets.
Which one, by the flat you have
- A studio or a landing where the gap beside the door is all there is: the HOOBRO small 3-tier at 19.7 in wide and 10.3 lb. The lightest and narrowest thing here that is still a seat.
- A damp ground-floor flat or a coastal building: the bamboo 3-tier, the only non-board carcass here and the shallowest at 11.3 in.
- A shared flat where two people leave at once: the Forteek tufted faux-leather at 32.3 in, on the understanding that it is the deepest pick here and leaves the least walkway.
- An entry that has to look tidy from the sofa: the VASAGLE hidden-storage bench, which puts everything under a padded lid — and traps damp, so not for wet shoes.
- A fourth-floor walk-up: the VASAGLE 3-tier rack at 15 lb in the box, with a published 198 lb seat once it is up there.
- A hallway under 34 inches wide: none of these comfortably. Our narrow entryway plan covers what to do when a bench is the wrong answer.
Frequently asked
Questions people actually ask
What is the best entryway bench for an apartment?
For most flats, the bamboo 3-tier: 11.3 inches deep so the corridor stays walkable, stable without a wall fixing, and the only pick here whose carcass is not a board product.
Do entryway benches need to be fixed to the wall?
A low, wide bench does not — it is a stable shape by geometry. Hall trees always do, and shoe cabinets above about 45 inches tall do. None of the five on this page needs an anchor.
How deep should a bench be in an apartment hallway?
Twelve inches or less if the hall is at the 36-inch code minimum, which leaves 24 inches of walking room — the point where two people can pass, or one can pass carrying a box.
What is the lightest entryway bench?
The HOOBRO small 3-tier at a published 10.3 lb, which one person can carry up several flights. The trade is that at that weight it slides if you push off it when standing up.
Can I put a bench behind my front door?
Only outside the door's swing arc — a quarter circle with a radius equal to the door's width, usually 32 to 36 inches. Tape the arc on the floor before you measure the wall; in a flat it often rules out the wall you had in mind.
Is a hall tree a bad idea in a rental?
It is a bigger commitment than people expect. Every hall tree we rank must be screwed to the wall and one maker specifies five screws, so it means five holes to make good when you leave.

Where these figures came from
- International Residential Code minimum hallway width — 36 in minimum for a residential hallway; 36 to 42 in typical, 42 to 48 in comfortable.
- Standard bench seat height — 18 to 19 in from floor to seat top is the residential standard; 18 in (46 cm) for an entryway bench specifically.
- Manufacturer published specifications — All five benches: published width, depth, seat height, static load and shipping weight where stated. Two makers publish no shipping weight and that is recorded as unpublished.
