Entryway storage for kids
The reason children's coats end up on the floor is almost always that the hook is at adult height. Here are the numbers, and the one safety point that matters more than any of them.

How high should children's coat hooks be?
Thirty-six to forty-two inches (91 to 107 cm) from the floor. That is well below the 60 to 65 inches used for adults, and it is why a hall tree — whose hooks are fixed at 55 to 65 inches — does not work for children without a second, lower rail beside it.
The dual-row arrangement is the one that works in practice: an adult rail at 64 inches and a child rail at 40, one above the other on the same wall. It costs one extra rail and it is the difference between a child hanging their own coat and a coat on the floor.
Why a hall tree is the wrong shape here
A hall tree's hooks are part of the frame, typically 55 to 65 inches from the floor, and there is no adjustment. For a seven-year-old that is above head height.
If a hall tree is what you have or what fits, the workaround is to accept it for adult coats and add a low rail on the adjacent wall for children. Trying to compromise on a single height produces a rail too low for adults and still too high for a small child.
Shoes at floor level
Children put shoes away on the floor or the lowest shelf, and nowhere else. Any storage above about 24 inches is, in practice, adult storage.
So the format that works is the one with an accessible bottom tier: an open-tier bench, a cubby bench where the lowest row is at floor level, or simply a basket. A tall nine-tier cabinet is excellent storage and a child will use exactly the bottom two rows of it.
A bench matters more here than for adults, too. A child sitting down to deal with shoes is quicker and less frustrating than a child balancing, and a 17 to 19 inch seat is usable from about age four.
The part that matters more than the heights
Tall, shallow furniture in a house with young children needs anchoring, without exception.
