Hallway storage furniture
The difference between an entryway and a hallway is that you walk down one of them. That single fact rules out about half the furniture sold for the purpose.

What furniture works in a hallway?
Long and shallow, rather than short and deep. A hallway is a corridor you walk down, so the piece that works is one you can pass without turning sideways: 9 to 12 inches (23 to 30 cm) deep, and as long as the wall allows.
That is the whole principle, and it inverts how furniture is usually chosen. In a room you pick a piece and find a wall for it. In a hallway the wall is fixed, the walkway is non-negotiable, and the piece has to fit what is left.
Long and shallow beats short and deep
Take two cabinets with roughly the same capacity. One is 23.6 inches wide, 9.5 inches deep and 47.7 inches tall, holding up to 20 pairs. The other is 41.5 inches wide, 9.4 inches deep and 32.6 inches tall, holding up to 28.
In a room, the narrow one is the better citizen — it takes less wall. In a hallway the wide one wins on every count: it is lower, so it does not loom over a corridor; it is more stable, so it does not need anchoring; its published top rating is 121 lb against 22, so it is a genuine surface; and it holds more. The only thing it needs is length, which a hallway has by definition.
The walkway is the specification
Measure the hallway at its narrowest and subtract 24 inches. That leftover is the only number that matters, and it is worth being strict about, because a corridor you resent walking down is a worse outcome than a corridor with less storage.
At the 36-inch code minimum, the budget is 12 inches. That admits every slim cabinet, every narrow bench, and no hall tree deeper than 11.8 inches. At 42 inches you have 18 to spend and almost everything is available.
Distribute along the length
The advantage a hallway has over an entry is length, and the way to use it is to spread pieces out rather than stack them in one place. A cabinet near the door, a bench further down, hooks on the opposite wall between them.
The reason this works is that the depth budget is per point along the corridor, not for the corridor overall. Two 10-inch pieces twelve feet apart feel like nothing; one 20-inch piece in the middle feels like an obstruction, even though the arithmetic on paper is the same.
One thing to avoid: putting anything on both walls at the same point. That halves the walkway twice over, and it is the one arrangement that makes a hallway genuinely unusable.
