# Tray & Threshold — full reference

## Positioning and method

Tray & Threshold covers three categories exhaustively — entryway storage
benches, shoe storage cabinets, and hall trees — rather than covering entryway
furniture broadly. The reader it is written for measures the hallway first and
chooses a product second, so the site has two crossing entry axes: by product
type, and by measurement.

### What the site does

1. Compiles the manufacturer's published specification for every product, and
   names that source on the page.
2. Converts every dimension to both inches and centimeters. Inches are authored
   once and centimeters derived, so the two cannot drift.
3. Checks stated pair capacities against real shoe lengths taken from the
   standard US sizing charts.
4. Ranks against a five-metric rubric with fixed weights, published in full,
   with the overall score computed from the metrics rather than entered by hand.

### What the site explicitly does NOT do

- It does not test products. Nobody at Tray & Threshold has handled any of the
  furniture it ranks, and every ranking page states this.
- It does not publish reviews, testimonials, star ratings or aggregate ratings,
  because none have been collected.
- It does not emit Review, reviewRating or aggregateRating structured data, for
  the same reason.
- It does not print prices in copy. Prices render only from a live data layer
  with a visible verification date, and anything older than 48 hours is removed
  automatically.
- It does not estimate a figure a manufacturer has not published. Unpublished
  figures are stated as unpublished.
- It makes no tenure or credential claim for its author.

## Funding

Tray & Threshold participates in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program and
earns a commission on qualifying purchases made through links on the site, at no
extra cost to the buyer. Commissions do not affect rankings, which come out of
the published rubric.

The site is not currently in any other retailer's affiliate program. Where a
product belongs in a comparison but cannot be earned from — the IKEA HEMNES
cabinets, which set the depth benchmarks for this category — it is included and
labeled as a non-earning link.

## The scoring rubric

Five metrics, scored 0-10, with fixed weights:

- Fit (30%) — usable storage per inch of floor depth and wall width, and how
  tight a space the piece still works in.
- Capacity (20%) — published pair count and compartment sizes, checked against
  real shoe lengths.
- Documentation (20%) — how completely the manufacturer publishes its own
  figures, including internal depths and load ratings.
- Build (20%) — published materials and stated load ratings.
- Value (10%) — capacity and published build relative to the category norm for
  the same footprint.

Disqualifier: a product with no published dimensional specification is not
eligible for any ranking on the site.

- US women's average size 8.5-9, about 9.8 in of foot length
- US men's average size 10-11, about 10.8 in of foot length
- The site adds about 0.9 in to foot length for the shoe itself; that allowance
  is the site's own arithmetic and is labeled as such wherever it appears.

## Common questions and the site's answers

- How deep should an entryway bench be? Twelve inches or less in a hallway at
  the 36-inch minimum; 16-18 in in an open foyer.
- How deep does a shoe cabinet need to be? About 12 in internal for shoes to lie
  flat; 9.4 in is the practical floor for tilted storage in a flip drawer.
- Does a shoe cabinet need ventilation? If wet shoes go into it, yes — odor is
  bacterial and the bacteria need trapped moisture.
- What is a hall tree? A freestanding unit combining hooks, a bench and shoe
  storage, 27-39 in wide and 68-72 in tall.
- Does entryway furniture need anchoring? Anything over about 40 in tall on a
  base under 14 in deep does.
- Can boots go in a shoe cabinet? Only one with a dedicated full-height
  compartment. Compartment height, not depth, is the constraint.
